Frequently asked questions

  1. What about buses?
Train Brain was originally developed just for the light rail and commuter trains in Minneapolis. Extending the app to include bus data is a possibility.
  2. Why is this better than using the Metro Transit website or the Google Maps app?
Downloading PDF schedules is slow, and navigating online schedules requires time. Train Brain lets you get schedule data with a few taps, with one hand. Train Brain adds additional useful information over Google Maps like fare information.
  3. Where is the data coming from?
Metro Transit publishes data in a Google specification on the datafinder website. The raw data is imported then adjusted for Train Brain. The import and adjustment phase changes often, as Metro Transit frequently changes the way data is formatted. Unfortunately there is no official developer API.
  4. Why does Northstar stations show all departures?
Northstar line primarily serves morning and after-work commuters. It has only a dozen or so departures each day from a given station, so it seems more useful to show all the departures. Hiawatha Line will only schedule data for the current hour.
  5. I'm not in Minneapolis, does this work with my local transit system?
No official plans for expanding beyond the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro Transit light rail system are in place at this time.
